The two-day clinic, dubbed “Train The Trainers” attended by a total of 22 participants that ended last Sunday, was conducted by state Sukma coach Ronnie Pan.
Enthusiasts, businessmen and school teachers had a rare opportunity to learn the basic fundamentals of golf as well as the aspects and history of the sport during their theory sessions.
Among subjects taught during the clinic’s practical sessions were introducing proper golf swings, effective chipping, teaching mechanics, safety related issues and a trainer’s role to mould raw youngsters into the game.
The clinic was initiated by the organising chairman Richard Madanan and Hermenegildus Ukun with the collaboration of the Kota Marudu Education Office and SGA, which was staged for the first time in the district since KMGC was registered in 2002.
Richard said, KMGC is now seriously working towards a nine-bay driving range near the township that will include a practice and chipping green, while ultimately a nine-hole golf course to cater for the golfing fraternity in Kota Marudu.
Meanwhile, Kota Marudu Education Officer Jemson Majimal said, the department will promote golf in the various schools in the district in an effort to develop golf among the young students as one of their school curriculum.
The department will also plan a similar clinic for both teachers and students, citing that Kota Marudu-born Fadzly Chua became Sabah’s Sukma gold medallist in the last Sukma in Pahang and he hopes that more would be unearthed through such clinics.
Present during the closing was the KMGC President Datuk Seri Paglima Dr. Maximus Ongkili, captain Seah Yun Chon, Jemson and SGA committee members.
